> In memory of Professor Tomio Obokata With great sadness we heard that Prof. Tomio Obokata from Gunma University has passed away on Oct. 21, 2011 after a difficult month long battle with an infection. Still very young, Prof. Obokata is known to all regular attendees at the Lisbon International Symposium on Application of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics, having attended almost every meeting since its inception in 1982.

He will be remembered well through his innovative developments in laser techniques and their applications to sprays and engine flows. Furthermore, he was always active in the international community through sabbatical visits and student exchanges, both in North America and in Europe. Prof. Obokata is responsible that many of us have had the opportunity to visit Gunma University in Kiryu City and no doubt many of us have had the pleasure to meet his lovely wife Rei Obokata and his daughters Aya and Kei. Prof. Obokata was a very fine colleague and we extend our sincerest condolences to his wife and children. We wish them strength in these difficult moments and hope that our recognition of the integrity and great personality of their husband and father will help them overcome their tremendous grief in the coming weeks and months.
